The Men of AAGOPA, Inc (MOA) make up the Bay Area’s premier African- and Caribbean-American men’s group. The MOA focuses on organizing and hosting positive, uplifting, and enriching events for same gender loving people. The name AAGOPA is an acronym and is a phonetic play on the word AGAPE – the Greek word for brotherly love. The acronym stands for African American Guys Organizing Positive Activities. The MOA is incorporated and is currently pursuing a 501c(3) status.
The MOA began 2007 with a bang by comprising the largest ever African-American crowd attending a film event for same gender living people in the Bay Area. The event was the screening of Dirty Laundry in February 2007.After the screening the MOA hosted a reception for the award-winning producer and director, Maurice Jamal.
In the summer of 2007 the MOA began the Smooth Summer Sunday series. This series is a monthly occasion and meeting for the gathering of the grown and sexy of Tampa Bay.These socials are planned for the summer months of June thru September and will be offered each year. The socials will feature local artists, education and other activities. To capitalize on the successes of the film screening and socials, and in collaboration with a prominent Bay area women’s group, the SunCoast Black Unity group was formed to produce a new event for 2008.The resulting White Party event of February 2008 catered to over 150 people. It was planned as part of an entire weekend of events that brought out over 400 people to Winter Pride events, films, parties, and an appreciation picnic. The Men of AAGOPA continues to conduct membership growth functions and invites prospective membership of men of color throughout the Tampa Bay area and the state of Florida.
